The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
