The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Change Follows Poor Response

Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had shown the need for a distinct vision.

The president stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

The news echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Below is the entire text from the president's memo:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our players.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. After some time of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and background in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in greeting Ben soon. We are all eager to keep witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.

The President

Background of the New Leader

The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. Then, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."

Project Ethos does not have an announced debut schedule or consoles, but players can anticipate more updates as production progresses.
